Arthur Mauro Student Residence, University of Manitoba
Topline Summary:
- Arthur V. Mauro Student Residence will be the University of Manitoba's first new building for student housing in 25 years
- The university charged the architect with incorporating "green" building products while remaining within budget
- Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free™ unfaced fiber glass insulation was specified and installed
Situation:
Located in Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba was planning its newest student residence building in more than 25 years. The Arthur V. Mauro student residence, named after a longtime chancellor of the university, would accommodate 310 students in an arrangement of 2-bedroom suites. Structurally, the building was designed to feature a contemporary interpretation of the Georgian-style buildings on campus.
In addition the university requested that the architect, LM Architectural Group of Winnipeg, incorporate environmentally friendly, ecologically sensitive or otherwise "green" products. Market research for insulation products found several which contained recycled content, but only one that had the additional benefit of being formaldehyde-free™.
Solution:
After carefully weighing the benefits and value of "green" building insulation, the specifier for LM Architectural Group chose Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free™ unfaced fiber glass insulation for the student residence. Instead of formaldehyde, JM uses an acrylic binder in its fiber glass insulation. In addition, all JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation manufactured in Canada contains an average of at least 50 percent recycled content.
"Our specifications are generally client-driven, and we make sure to provide quality products that meet their needs," said Robert Winslow of LM Architectural Group. "The university was very interested in environmentally friendly building principles. We spent a significant amount of time researching options and found Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free fiber glass insulation."
Results:
The specification for Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free™ fiber glass insulation was upheld, and the insulation was installed in the student residence. The building is scheduled for completion in August 2003, in time for the fall semester.
Looking forward, LM Architectural Group is currently working on two claim centres for the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation (MPIC). Based on the building owner's desire for employing sustainable building principles for these new centres, LM Architectural Group recommended Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free™. The projects are currently out for tender.
