HealthSouth Prototype Building Project
Topline Summary:
- Owner-client HealthSouth Corporation is the nation's largest healthcare services provider in the United States
- The company was planning to build a prototype facility that utilizes various "green" construction principles as have been outlined by the U.S. Green Building Council
- Specifier chose Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free™ insulation due to its low VOC content and ability to meet sustainable building standards
Situation:
Based in Birmingham, Ala., HealthSouth is the nation's largest healthcare services provider, with nearly 1,700 facilities in all 50 states and abroad. Because health and well-being are at the center of the company's focus, HealthSouth continuously seeks to provide the safest possible structures for its clients and employees. That includes using sustainable architecture standards such as materials with low volatile organic chemicals (VOC).
The new HealthSouth facility planned for Birmingham was scheduled to be the first hospital of its type – a fully digital acute care facility designed with several "green" features as delineated by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.
In choosing to utilize various components of the LEED system, the quality control director for the hospital interior, Ross Amaro of CLA Architecture, selected Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free™ insulation to satisfy all in-wall applications.
"Formaldehyde-free™ insulation is important to our jobs," Amaro said. "It gives you a safer building for the client and the user." Roughly 400-450,000 square feet of Johns Manville Formaldehyde-free™ insulation has been specified for the interior of the 13-story, 930,000 square-foot HealthSouth facility.
